FAQ
Does acupuncture hurt?
Most people experience little to no pain during acupuncture. The needles used are extremely thin—much thinner than those used for injections—and are gently inserted. You might feel a slight pinch or tingling, but many find the process relaxing and sometimes even fall asleep during treatment.
What can I expect at my first acupuncture treatment?
Your first session will begin with a consultation to understand your health history, concerns, and goals. After this, the acupuncture treatment will be tailored to your needs. The session usually lasts about an hour. We’ll also discuss any questions or next steps at the end.
How do I prepare for my acupuncture appointment?
Wear comfortable, loose clothing to allow easy access to acupuncture points. It’s best to eat a light meal beforehand and stay hydrated. Come with an open mind and any questions you might have!
Does acupuncture have any side effects?
Acupuncture is very safe when performed by a licensed practitioner. Some people may experience mild soreness, slight bruising, or temporary fatigue after treatment, but these usually resolve quickly. If you have any concerns, please don’t hesitate to discuss them with me.
What does acupuncture treat?
Acupuncture can treat a wide range of conditions, from acute to chronic, from physical to emotional. Even if you have seen an acupuncturist before without success, every professional has a different approach, and it is worth trying again with another practitioner. Common reasons that people consult acupuncturists include:
- Digestive complaints
- Migraines
- Acute and chronic pain
- Menstrual issues
I have a more complete list of conditions that are suitable for acupuncture on my therapies page. If you are still unsure if acupuncture is right for you, contact me to discuss further.
Is acupuncture safe?
Yes, acupuncture is generally very safe when performed by a trained and licensed practitioner, like me. The needles are sterile, single-use, and extremely thin—much finer than those used in medical injections. Side effects are rare and usually mild, such as slight bruising or temporary soreness at the needle site. I am trained to take your full health history into account and use techniques that are appropriate for your condition.
How often will I need treatment?
Acupuncture works best when done consistently, as its effects build over time. While many people notice improvements within the first few sessions, lasting changes for chronic issues usually take about five to ten treatments. I typically recommend starting with weekly sessions for the first five weeks. From there, we’ll evaluate your progress and may begin spacing appointments out to every two weeks.
It’s important to know that acupuncture isn’t a quick fix—real, lasting results take time and commitment. Some people stop treatment too soon, either because they feel a bit better or because they’re hoping for instant results. To give your body the best chance at real change, plan for a full course of ten sessions. You can book your treatments here.
Can I get acupuncture if I'm afraid of needles?
Yes, many people who are afraid of needles still receive and benefit from acupuncture. The needles used are extremely thin, much finer than those used for injections, and often cause little to no discomfort. I will go at your pace, and can adjust techniques to help you feel comfortable and safe throughout the treatment.
Do you provide insurance receipts?
Yes, always. I provide receipts for acupuncture in the name of the person receiving treatment.
What is your cancellation policy?
I ask for 24 hours notice when cancelling appointments. For less than 24 hours, I ask that you pay the full cost of the treatment.
